2012 Monarch Spotlight:  Blair Roberts

Blair Roberts Becoming A Star After Taking Prep School Route

Kala Gause

September 27, 2012

Former Section V, and Bishop Kearney standout in both basketball and football,  is beginning to make a name for himself on the college gridiron.  Blair Roberts has emerged as a primary big-time playmaker for the Old Dominion University Monarchs.  Through 4 games this season Roberts has totaled 23 receptions for 308 yards, and 4 TD's, while averaging 13.4 yards a catch, and 77 yards a game.

Roberts path to being a current Division 1 football athlete was not as smooth of a transition as it may seem.  In high school, Roberts was most known for his contributions to his New York State Championship basketball team.  College football did not seem like it was going to become a reality.  The 6'2, 190 lbs WR got interest from a few schools, however he needed to make some improvements in the classroom.  After graduation, Roberts entered Trinity-Pawling Prep School for boys, improved his grades and put up some big numbers on the field.  Roberts received interest from StonybrookAlbanyTemple, and Old Dominion.  ODU Recruiting Coordinator Ron Whitcomb is also a Rochester native, and was one of the main reasons why Roberts chose to accept the scholarship to play his college football for the Monarchs.

Roberts decision is paying off big-time for he and the entire Old Dominion team.  The Monarchs have been dominating there opponents, outscoring them 236-105 going into week 5, and Roberts has been a huge part of that.  With a 4-0 start, it helps to have a great QB in Taylor Heinicke running an offense that averages 669.8 yards/game, and 529 of those yards are through the air.  Roberts being only in his sophomore year is expected to put up some big numbers through his career at ODU, and will be bound to catch the attention of NFL scouts.

Being from Rochester, NY where recruiting is just beginning to pick up over the last 2-3 years, Roberts success at Old Dominion has led to coach Whitcomb finding more talent in the Section V community.  ODU has verbal commitments from seniors ATH-Chauncey Scissum (Rush-Henrietta), and DL-Cullen Casey (McQuaid).  Whitcomb, has also offered scholarships to senior OL-Alexander Officer (Eastridge), and juniors, OL-Jaquis Webb (Gates Chili) and WR-Jojo Gause (Bishop Kearney).  ODU has also shown high interest in RB-Jeremiah Ortiz (Eastridge), and WR-Craig Hardgers (Greece Olympia).  Coach Whitcomb has been one of the most active recruiters for this area in the span of 2 years, and truly knows how to find talent for a winning program like Old Dominion.

ODU's next game is Saturday, September 29th on the road against the Richmond Spyders 3:30pm.
