Meet James Monroe High School student-athlete Chane'l Giddens.  Along with being one of the top female Volleyball players in our area, Giddens is also recognized as the 2018 Gear Up Student of The Year.  The 5'6, 146lb junior has plans of one day becoming a neurological surgeon.  Boasting a 4.40 GPA, Giddens also a varsity cheerleader, softball player, and a standout for her volleyball team.

"I enjoy being a 3-sport student-athlete for the Monroe Red Jackets.  Balancing my day to day activities along with my homework is necessary for me to become successful one day.   As team captain for my volleyball team, it is my job to be a leader both on and off the court, and throughout the school year. My goal of becoming a surgeon is what drives me each day , and pushes me to go forward.  I am most interested in attending either the University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology, or Syracuse University to pursue my goal," explains Giddens.

This gifted young lady is well on her way, and seems like she has already established a strategy to reach her goals. "I have a strong support system, both at home and school.  My coach is always pushing me to not settle and become better each day, and I can't say enough about my mom.  She has such a busy schedule herself, however always manages to be there for me, she has put me in position for me to reach my goals, and I will not let anything get in the way of making her proud," says the scholar-athlete.
